Knee Uniconpartmental Osteoarthritis

SEGMENTAL TREATMENT FOR A SEGMENTAL DISEASE

Several authors have published reports demonstrating 95% or greater ten-year survivability with total knee replacement, the largest study to date, (The Swedish Registry) reporting on more than 30,000 cases also demonstrated 95% ten-year survivability with TKR. This statistic applied only to patien6s receiving total knee replacement at age 75 or older. When the age of insertion was reduced to age 65, the survival rate dropped to 80%. One revision for every 5 TKRÕs implanted over a ten year period can be anticipated when treating patients under age 65 with a TKR.

The same Swedish Registry also reported ten year follow up on more than 7,600 unicompartmental knee replacements with a 90% ten year survivability rate. 7,649 Primary Uni Knees for Arthrosis

There is a need for a pre-TKR procedure. Unicompartmental Knee replacement properly utilized is a valuable option as a pre-TKR procedure.

Additional authors (Scott,Marmor,Cartier) have reported ten-year survival rates with unicompartmental arthroplasty of over 90%. Unfortunately, at 12 years the survival rates of unicompartmental arthroplasty fall to 80%. Unicompartmental arthroplasty can be considered of intermediate term survivability.
